Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania, Australia's only island state, with a
population of 128,048. Approximately only 40 per cent of Tasmania's
population live in Hobart, making it the least urbanised of all the states. It is the second oldest city in Australia and the southernmost capital. It is located on Derwent River, in view of Mt
Wellington. Hobart is renowned for it's strong sense of colonial
heritage and as one of Australia's most stunning cities.
The city is named after Robert Hobart, who was the Secretary of State for War and Colonies, when Hobart was settled in 1826. Initially Hobart was only settled to prevent the French from establishing a colony in Tasmania. So Lieutenant
John Bowen came to Hobart with a group of 49 people, including 35 convicts.
The docks and Salamanca Place are key sites in Hobart for tourists and locals. The famous
Sydney - Hobart Yacht Race finishes here every year, a couple of days before the start of the new year. Every weekend the Salamanca Markets are a tourist draw card. The dockside is also renowned for it’s superb Georgian Warehouses (built between 1830 and 1850) which have now been converted into restaurants, galleries and gift shops.
The telephone code for Hobart and the state of Tasmania is 03. Hobart observes AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time) which is GMT + 10 hours. In summer they observe AEDT (Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time) which is GMT + 11 hours.
