Mount
Wellington reaches a height of 1,271 metres (4,170 ft)?and stands behind
Hobart, providing a dramatic backdrop from many directions. Much of
Hobart suburbia is displayed over its foothills and hidden in its valleys and ravines.
The summit is accessible by motor vehicle on a narrow road that passes through mountain side suburbs and then clings to the steep sides as it makes its ascent. Because of its popularity as a tourist attraction extensive car
parking space has been provided, together with an observation
shelter and
toilets. Refreshment facilities are available part way to (or from)
the summit at an area known as
the Springs.
Walking tracks provide foot access to various parts of the mountain including
the summit. Many tracks on the lower slopes provide extensive
views of
Hobart and suburbs and the Derwent Estuary.
The altitude of
the summit provides the mountain peak with its own climate. Cloud can appear with very little notice to obscure the view. The temperature at
the summit is normally much cooler than
Hobart.
