One of the features of
Hobart is its proximity to the wharves. The area nearest to the city is generally a tourist area with the commercial port a little further away. The general area is often referred to as Constitution Dock but the dock of this name is a particular area and is a walled dock with an opening for boats that is normally kept shut to facilitate pedestrian access and movement.
The dock is part of
Hobart's maritime history with reminders aplenty. The dock is now used as a mooring area for both part of
Hobart's fishing fleet and pleasure cruisers. Water borne tourist activities are based at the dock as are seafood vendors and restaurants.
Constitution Dock is probably best known in modern times as the point where crowds gather to welcome yachts as they finish the
Sydney to
Hobart Yacht Race held annually between Christmas and New Year.
Accommodation is available in the area with many of the old warehouses converted to beautique hotels and apartments. Of particular interest is the old Henry Jones IXL building that now houses a hotel.
