The Mount
Nelson Signal Station is located on a mountain of that name south of
Hobart. The sight provides a panoramic overview of the Derwent River estuary. Its choice as the sight for
Hobart's first
signal station was sound and logical. It was built in 1811. It was the first
signal station constructed in Tasmania. It no longer operates as an aid to shipping.
The original building remains and contains interesting maritime memorabilia. It is an easy walk from the car park and viewing area. Also near the car park is the
Signal Station Brasserie located in the former head signalman's house and the
Signal Station Cafe. Both provide
views of the same areas as the adjacent
lookout. Barbecues and picnic facilities are provided in the public area of the
lookout.
