Information

Joseph Moir's Shot Tower is situated on the Channel Highway at Taroona, in Hobart's riverside southern suburbs. The 58 metre tall tower provides excellent views of the Derwent and Hobart's southern suburbs for anyone prepared to pay a small fee and climb the 318 wooden steps to get there. While climbing spare a thought for the workers who had to make the climb several times a day laden with hot lead to drop through a screen to so that spheres of lead shot would form during the fall into vats of water.

The shot tower was completed in 1870 and was Australia's tallest building for four years and Tasmania's for 100 years until overtaken by the 67 metre tower at the summit of Mount Wellington.

The Shot Tower also contains a gift shop, a coffee shop and toilets.
