Formally the Tasmanian Limited, the Margate Train is the last station for this prestigious train that ran between
Hobart and
Launceston until 1978. The train was built in England in 1950.
The carriages have been converted into speciality shops which open onto a covered "platform". The shops include arts and crafts, bric-a-brac, a microbrewery and a buffet car offering espresso coffee and pancake parlour.
Near by is a huge antique warehouse and second-hand
shop here, located in an old IXL apple packing shed, as
well as a children's play area,
toilets, baby change facility and plenty of car
parking.
Margate is about 19 km south of
Hobart on the coastal road that runs through
Sandy Bay and Taroona. It is worth a stop if travelling that road.
