When at the full supply level - FSL, it holds 254 GL which is the gross capacity. The water would then be level with the top of the spillway at 1229.87 m AHD. 239 GL is the active capacity which is the actual usable water able to be diverted to Lake Eucumbene. Has only spilled in 1964,1975 and in 1992 when the level was 40 cm over the spillway. Most years the reservoir ranges from 20% to 40% full and in a wet year like 2016 up to 70%. In 2018 held at 50% due to erosion issues at the outlet at
Providence Portal.
The easiest access to the Reservoir is via the Tantangara Rd off the Snowy Mtns Hwy near
Adaminaby. This is open all year but subject to winter snowfalls. From June to Oct the road is closed by a
gate at the
Dam.
A scenic 90km round trip from the Highway then beyond the
dam to
Currango Homestead, the
Port Phillip Trail over
Currango Plain to the
Long Plain Rd and back to the Hwy at
Rules Point is a pleasant days outing. The
Port Phillip Trail is flooded when the level exceeds 25%.
Snowy 2.0 will involve higher water levels and probable permanent inundation of the Trail. Construction of a new tunnel portal a few km NW of the
dam will also impact park use.
