Concrete gravity
dam on upper
Murrumbidgee River completed in 1960 as part of the
Snowy Mountains Scheme. An ungated overfall spillway descends 36 m down the face of the
dam into the stilling basin. Water is diverted into a 3 metre diameter 16.6 km long tunnel emptying into
Lake Eucumbene at Providence Portal. Water returns to the lower Murrumbidgee via 4 power stations on the Tumut River.
Trout fishing and camping in the cool alpine summer. Access to
dam all year subject to snowfalls. Beyond
dam the road to
Currango Homestead is closed June to Oct long weekends.
