This
campground is located in the northern
Kosciuszko National Park and is suitable for groups. It is a remote
campground on the edge of a frost hollow, where cold air accumulates in the valley as it drains off the hillsides overnight. Thus tree seedlings do not survive in the valley, so grasses flourish. Where the treeline meets the grassy slopes is the start of the frost hollow.
There is no mobile reception at this
campsite. Limited service is available 5km away at the radio tower on Pocket Saddle Road.
From NPWS website: Nestled beside Gurrangorambla Creek and sheltered by black sallee gums, Old Snowy
campground offers invigorating valley
views, along with frequent visits from kangaroos and wallabies. Bush surroundings, unmarked sites, no power, and rudimentary facilities are all part of the
campground’s back-to-basics charm. Set up your tent or trailer as high up the
hill as possible as it is warmer. Then head off on a bushland mountain bike ride, exploring the northern end of
Currango Plain.
Bushwalking is a treat in this scenic area, too, so why not come in spring to wander through the
wildflowers? Old Snowy
campground is ideal if you want to combine camping with horse riding. You’ll find convenient, dividable horse yards, and it’s a great starting point for the
heritage-packed Pocket Ride. Birdwatchers, too, are in for a treat with thrushes, treecreepers and currawongs in abundance. And if a spot of trout fishing takes your fancy, you’re
well-catered for in the nearby creeks and streams of
Kosciuszko National Park. No fees.
