The
Port Phillip Trail provides access to
Currango Homestead by crossing the southern end of the plain. Usually open in summer once the water level is less than 25%. In the spring of 2016 the level exceeded 70% and was 12 m over the trail at the Mosquito
Creek crossing. In 2018/19 the level remained at 50% with the trail 6 m underwater. Trail open late October 2019.
Once the water recedes, the foreshore has a picturesque green flush which extends over the plain. This provides abundant feed for feral
brumbies, which controversially are damaging the ecosystem. They are competing with native animals, trampling the fragile alpine meadows and destroying the habitat of the endangered Galaxia fish.
Camping allowed along the shore and fishing in
Tantangara Reservoir.
