Namatjira Drive (bitumen) crosses the
Finke River at this point just before the turn off to
Glen Helen Gorge and the entry to the
Finke River 2 Mile (4x4)
camping area. Although there is a dip in the road here, the crossing is bitumen but can often still have a little water even in the dry winter season.
The
Finke River is one of the world's oldest watercourses and flows for 650 km from here to be lost in the sands of the
Simpson Desert. Over many millions of years the river and its tributaries have carved out the rugged landscape you can see from this location. The Western Aranda name for the
Finke River is Tjoritja urlpaya.
