This 4x4 accessible
camping area is a fantastic
camp alongside a watercourse with fresh water (safe for a swim, although often cold). Finke 2 Mile is an ideal spot for 4 wheel drivers to base themselves to escape the busier campgrounds and explore the
West MacDonnell Ranges. The
campground also provides access to Section 11 of the Larapinta Trail.
4WD access conditions vary considerably across the year due to water levels but there are numerous tracks leading up the river for approx 3km. You will need to remove air from your tyres to get closer to the river as you will need to cross the very soft sand but at the river front there are pebbles and stones and many people like to pick a spot right on the river frontage. Further back you will find protection in the trees.
This location is a popular
camp spot as it is almost immediately across the road from
the entrance to
Glen Helen where you can drop in for a visit to
the gorge (short walk less than 5 minutes), or enjoy lunch or dinner or just drinks on
the balcony overlooking
the rock walls. It is also a good base
camp for those that want to do any of the nearby walks such as Mt Sonder, Ormiston
Gorge and other day trips.
When you book, you do not book a site and can
camp anywhere. There is plenty of room. There are no facilities here at all. And is strictly for 4x4 vehicles with deflated tyre pressures - if towing ensure your camper trailer or caravan is an offroad model.
Book before arrival as there is no mobile service here (Telstra and Optus signal is weak but insufficient for internet data).
