The Entrance is named for its location at the point where Tugerah Lakes, one of the several lakes on the NSW coast, between
Sydney and
Newcastle, meets the Pacific Ocean. The lake system is tidal with the entrance open to the sea.
The Entrance is a residential and tourist centre, popular with residents of
Sydney and its suburbs for short breaks and longer holidays. It is
home to a number of caravan parks, motels, hotels, resorts and other rental accommodation. The town has a substantial commercial centre with a variety of eating
places, from fish and chips on
the beach to fine dining.
The town and surrounding area offers a wide range of tourist activities including the feeding of the pelican
population by the water each afternoon.
