The
Glen Helen Gorge is formed from quartzite.
Sandstone was deposited in the area some 500 million years ago when it was a huge inland sea. It was subsequently tilted and uplifted. As this uplift was occurring the
Finke River slowly eroded its way through the mountain range.
The gorge is another example of the spectacular geology of the MacDonnell ranges and offers a semi-permanent
waterhole. Many people take the 10 or so minute stroll down the riverbed to
Glen Helen Gorge and some even enjoy the swim there.
There is so much to see and do with a range of 4WD tracks, nature and bush walks, and a swim in
Glen Helen Gorge is also a must.
