Pumps water during off-peak and/or low cost periods against a head of 231.6 m. Water flows 1 km up a 3 m diameter steel pipeline into the
Jindabyne -
Island Bend Tunnel. Power is consumed by two main pumps each of 25.4 MW input capacity. Each is assisted by a lower booster pump of 6.7 MW. Rated pumping capacity is 25.5 cumecs but is often 28. Over a year 250 GL may be pumped with the station operating some 6-8 hours a day.
This water then flows into
Geehi Reservoir and then falls 820 m down the western flank of the Snowy Mtns at up to 240 cumecs, powering Murray 1 and 2 power stations.
Excess water at
Geehi can be returned to
Lake Jindabyne via a bypass line. This directs high pressure water into a dissipator
chute where the energy is expended as air mixes air with the water jet and the placid lake water. When the lake level is below the
chute, the jet of water is sprayed up into the air by the flip at the end of the
chute. It sprays in a graceful arc over 100 m long, becomes aerated and falls onto the water surface like a heavy rain.
No public access.
