This adit is a mid-way entrance to the Eucumbene-Snowy tunnel constructed from Dec 1961 to Oct 1965. Over 900,000 cubic metres of
rock was drilled and blasted to build the 23.5 km long and 6 m diameter tunnel. The spoil was conveniently dumped less than a km away, out of sight and out of mind in the '60's. It is now being rehabilitated and provides a free source of
rock and gravel for use in the surrounding national park.
The horseshoe shaped tunnel transfers water from
Island Bend pondage to Lake Eucumbene for storage. Flow is reversed when the water is required to generate electricity in Murray 1 and 2 Power Stations. Additional water is transferred up the
Jindabyne -
Island Bend tunnel to add to the supply.
