Explorer, navigator and buccaneer William
Dampier landed at this spot in 1699. He was aboard the HMS Roebuck and was exploring the western coast of Australia. Spending 9 days in the area, he named
Shark Bay and made the first scientific collection of botanical specimens of Australia before heading along the coast to the north.
Visitors today can see a
plaque on a
rock that has been erected to commemorate
Dampier's historic landing at this site. A
campsite exists at this site. See separate listing for details of
Dampier's Landing
Campsite.
