Track east of here leads down a sand
hill to Dampiers Landing. This is a
campsite in a
sand bowl with no beach
views unless you climb the sand hills. From the
campsite, there is a 4WD track that takes you over one more sandhill towards the ocean but you still cannot see
the beach. Follow the tracks north that pass just behind a line of dunes. The tracks are easy driving but you'll get a sense of remoteness. The track is all but blown away so just follow the line marked with star pickets. Keep going until you reach signage that marks the historic site called "
Camp of the Perseverance" sticking up out of the sand. There is no evidence of the shipwreck or artefacts to see here but the signs tell the story and its a sobering thought to imagine being in this location in their predicament. Continue driving further north until you reach
the beach at the northern tip of the island. This is
Cape Levillain -
the beach is VERY soft here due to constant barrage by the ocean on this wild coastline. It is not recommended to drive out onto
the beach unless you've checked conditions first and have another vehicle with you. To return, you'll have to retrace your steps.
