Looking for suggestions of destinations in Central Queensland and then elsewhere please that would be ideal for early October coming into Qld from northern Flinders Ranges but not sure which way to traverse yet…

Things we are looking for:
- day hikes (up to 15km) with scenic lookouts, big mountain climbs etc
- rock pools, waterfalls, rainforest areas
- calm rivers/creeks and calm beaches/lagoons to SUP (4-15km)
- MTB trails (10-70km), pref single track and flow
- campfires
- national parks and state forests with good 4WD camps/attractions
- wildlife, birds and wildflowers
- snorkelling
- once we get to the coast will definitely go to Moreton Island
- have previously been to Fraser Is, Inskip, Rainbow Beach, Noosa, etc so will give that area a miss
- not intending to go as far north as Cairns
- have previously driven the OTT to the tip of Cape York
- have previously driven the CREB track
- have been to Karumba, Lawn Hill etc
- have been to Carnarvon NP

Travel in 200 series LC and towing small, heavy duty off-road camper trailer (Ultimate). No kids.

Thx Michelle

Michelle
Having just spent a month wandering through Qld I was frustrated with the reduction in coastal swimming locations in CQ since I started going there 45 years ago due to crocs, if you believe the signs. If you are going as far as Townsville, 40km further north we thought Paluma Range NP, Paluma village and Dam was a great find, Ticks six out of your first seven requirements.
EO Traveller shows you the tracks/trails!
I even had to help a MTB rider fix her chain which was wedged between the sprocket and spokes.
In CQ perhaps look at Blackdown NP, could also try Byfield NP north of Yeppon.

Thank you for your reply. I had actually put Paluma and Blackdown on my list. Problem is how best to cut across from the west/centre in an interesting way that also includes other nice spots. Will check out Byfield :) we have been to Yeppoon but only 1 night.

And Expedition (Limited Depth) National Park, which is the same geological formation as Carnarvon, but without the development and crowds and accessible via minor roads.

If you are anywhere near Cunnamulla check out Charlotte Plains camping just east of Cunnamulla. Interesting and educational.

Yes, I second Diamantina National Park. Carnarvon Gorge, Blackdown Tableland, Kroombit Tops, and Five Rocks are all great spots on Central Qld too.

Hi Michelle,

You say you are coming into Central Qld. which road are you using?

If you have not done The Simpson Desert, and are coming from Alice Springs, you could try going down the Ghan Heritage Rd, also taking in Chambers Pillar. Once you get to Finke, you head to Old Andado Station, and on to Mt. Dare, then across the Simpson to Birdsville.

If not, then the Plenty Highway, stopping at Gemtree for a couple of days to do some fossicking for Garnets or Zircon before continuing to Boulia. You could then make your way Bedourie, then the Diamantina Lakes through to Winton. You could then go down to Opalton to check out the Opal fields before heading further east to the coast.

EDIT: sorry for first short reply (was busy).

HI Macca, thank you for the reply but yep we've visited all those areas in Outback Qld and travelled all those routes on previous trips.

We have actually travelled around (and within) Australia extensively before we started ExplorOz on a journey lasting 2 years - (offroad coastal navigation for a year, then deserts for just under a year) and then had kids and started ExplorOz. We have travelled the eastern coastline extensively whilst growing up but raising our kids in WA we have put our time into exploring the WA coast and did a huge trip to Tasmania and the Vic High Country, and have also explored the WA/SA/NT deserts. Other than flying over to the east coast for family visits, we haven't driven out of WA/NT/SA for many years now and the forests and waterfalls of Qld are calling us!

We have 2 options in mind for coming across from Perth (both of which we've done previously also) - Anne Beadell then Strezlecki Trk, then straight to Cunamulla (never been there or that area) and from there not sure where to go to start exploring the forests.

Alternative is a quick blast across the Great Central Road and Plenty Hwy and from there not sure where as above.

The longer our delay leaving here the more we've had to keep adjusting our plan as it starts to get hotter and we have about 2 months to explore Qld if we like before heading to NSW where we also have lots of ranges to explore.

So yes, have explored each of the areas you've mentioned. But thanks anyway.

I think the suggestions to go check out the Salvator Rosa section and Mt Moffit section of Carnarvon NP will be taken onboard. Plus Paluma. Plus Five Rocks (Byfield), so I'm starting to get an idea now...

I had already put Blackdown NP on the list too. That looks ideal to me!!

Thanks
Michelle

It's a full days drive to go from Salvator Rosa around the other side to the Mt Moffit section of Carnarvon NP. They are different as one is down near the Plains, not too dissimilar to the Gorge section, the other (Mt Moffit) is up near 1000m. If you have the time that's great, but if you are limited and going up to Blackdown, perhaps skip Mt Moffit.

Yes good point...I was looking at that - I had been trying to map it all out as definitely want to go to Blackdown so good to know which section to skip if time limited. Thanks so much for the assistance that's what I really need to know.

Hi Michelle,

No problem with short reply, but thank you for the longer explanation.

The area on the western side of Carnarvon Gorge is very nice. There is a circular rock formation in the Mt Moffit area, just a short walk from the road. I can’t think of the name of it, but we’ll worth a look.

If you are going that far north and are looking for waterfalls there are 18 in the Atherton Tablelands. I have a personnel trek with them but can't work out how to make it open to all if you are interested.
Wallaman waterfall near Ingham is the tallest single drop fall in Australia in the Girringun NP. Also Murray falls in the same NP.

Not so much a destination, but a great spot for an overnighter if you are travelling on the Gregory Developmental road north of Charters Towers.

A spot we found via the well known app which has been having a few technical problems lately where it is listed as 'Big Bend- Echo Creek. (Note it is not the same locations listed as Big Bend in 'Places). Nearest 'marker' in 'Places' is Fletcher Dale homestead.

34kms north of Charters Towers & a few kms south of the popular free camp at Fletcher Creek.

Obviously an area used as a playground for motorcycles at weekends, but mid week we were alone with the numerous wallabies & birdlife alongside the pretty stretch of the Basalt lined Burdekin river.

A couple of kms east of the Gregory developmental rd. The access road off the Gregory Dev Rd is not sighnposted. You have to cross the the Lolworth Creek about 1kkm in, which is easy enough, not deep, & stony bottom but it keeps the grey nomad hordes out.

If we hadn't been 'on a mission' at the time we would have happily have spent several nights there.

Tight sandy tracks, but we managed without drama in our Patrol & Tvan. Lots of tracks, so at some point get out & wander to determine your best way in.

Thanks Cuppa,
That looks a good spot - I've added 3 new Places (one for the river crossing, one for the general site/info and one for the lookout). Hopefully will check it out some day.

This trip is getting delayed even further so plans will probably change and might not go through the centre to reach the Qld coast but all these suggestions have been great to research.

You were mentioning east-west routes across Qld. If you are coming into the state via Birdsvile there is a good route through to Blackall. This would lead to the northern part of Carnarvon Gorge. For some of the way it follows a dismantled railway that was intended to go towards Birdsville but stopped short at Yaraka when they realised the futility of attempting to maintain a railway across the Channel Country. Yaraka is worth a day or three stay. Route map.

Well that was a good one - I've updated some places around the area, downloaded the sculpture trail map and uploaded it to the relevant places. Think its too far north of where we might have to travel now that its getting later in the year and our departure is getting even further delayed but one day we'll take a look in this area thanks for the tip!!

We did some billabong hopping across southern Queensland a week or two ago. Noccundra to Eulo Billabong to Boobera Lagoon (20kms SW of Gooniwindi, so just in NSW, but close enough). All lovely spots. FWIW , Noccundra now has Optus coverage, but not Telstra.

A few places we’ve been to but maybe a bit tropical from your recent comments & delayed departure.

Cobbold Gorge, Agate Ck, both south of Forsayth.
Undarra Lava Tubes, O’Briens Camp, both on Mt Surprise-Georgetown road.
Lappa Junction-Mt Garnet abandoned railway route(towing not advised)
Mt Mulligan Mine/Township, can camp at Kingsborough, north of Dimbula.
Granite Gorge, SW of Mareeba. Camping & walking down Granite Gorge. 12kms out of Mareeba. Good spot to use as a base for travel around the Tablelands.
Some attractions in Mareeba/Atherton area:
Cheese & Chocolate Factory, Tolga Pub for counter lunch, Tolga Woodworks, numerous distilleries & Coffee Works, in Mareeba.
Herberton Historical Village, in Herberton.
Herberton Range National Park.
And for a final challenge, spend a day climbing Mt Bartle-Frere. Not to be taken lightly, I’m told!

Happy travels
Bob.
