Tolga is a small country town that acts as an
intersection between
Lake Tinaroo,
Mareeba and
Atherton. It is an extremely fertile farming area that produces a range of crops such as fruit, potatoes, maize, sugar cane and peanuts. It is also a prime location for cattle grazing, dairy and deer farming.
Currently, Tolga is not a tourist town. It is a small town utilised largely by farmers and retirees, but it retains a distinct charm that makes it a lovely place to stop for a bite to eat. Tolga has a large horse racetrack, woodworks,
post office, pub and primary school. It’s a great spot for travellers to stretch their legs and take in some crisp, fresh mountain air.
A centre strip in the main street features a towering fig tree and
heritage and timber display consisting of seven carved poles, much like totem poles. These showcase in creative carving, aspects of the
Atherton Tableland’s rich
heritage including Aboriginal culture, animals plants and threats to the rainforest habitat.
