The village of Byfield is comprised of a school,
general store which seems to double as fuel supply, bistro, coffee
shop and pub and a collection of residences. The area
population is boosted by a substantial number of houses in the bush and a number of accommodation establishments including echo retreats and B&Bs. The
general store offers a very extensive black board menu for both food and drinks.
Byfield is the centre of a plantation pine harvesting industry. The access road to
Byfield National Park and the northern beach and beach camping areas (north of Corio Bay) is from just south of the town. Much of this road and
the beach are categorised as high clearance four wheel drive only.
