Birdsville is a small town located in far Western Queensland, Australia, in the Diamantina Shire. (Shire pop. 326 in the 2001 Census.) The town is located 1600 km east of the state capital,
Brisbane, but only 1200 km north of
Adelaide, and connected via the
Birdsville Track extending 514 km to
Marree in South Australia through the Strzelecki Desert.
Mount Isa is the nearest large city 720 km north.
Birdsville is situated on the eastern edge of the
Simpson Desert, hence the climate is very arid. Summers are searingly hot at 40 plus.
The town is nowadays famous for the legendary annual Birdsville Races, which are held in September in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. The tiny town
population is swelled to many thousands for the two day event, and hundreds of aircraft often fill the town's
airstrip.
Birdsville is
home to a 150 kW Geothermal Power Station. Water is extracted from the Great Artesian Basin (at 98 °C) before being vaporised into steam, producing pollution free energy for the town.
