The
Royal Hotel was built in 1883 and has been used as a hotel, a hospital and a school throughout its colourful lifetime. Constructed from dehydrated gypsum mixed with sand and water as cement for the stonework, this Australian style of masonry was a feature of central Australian buildings at the time and was developed as a way of controlling extreme temperatures. It was practical too because buildings could be made in areas where timber was scare. This site is listed with the National Trust. Please respect by taking photos but not interfering.
