Adelaide, Marree is an old settlement on the edge of the vast desert area of Central Australia. It has an average annual rainfall of only 155 mm.
The area around Marree was first explored by Europeans when, In 1840, Edward
John Eyre travelled north from Spencer Gulf and reached the southern shores of Lake Eyre South. In 1859
John McDouall Stuart entered the area and it was his assistant Herrgott who discovered the mound springs after which the early town took its name - although somewhere along the way poor Herrgott lost an 'r' and
the settlement became
Hergott Springs. The
camp became an official town in 1883 when the railway reached it. it was then renamed Marree.
Whilst the
Marree Hotel is the epicentre of the town, there is no bank, but mobile phone service came in 2019. The
bore water is unpalatable (although it is fine for washing, bathing and cleaning your teeth) so come prepared. Power is by generator and outages are common at the town's establishments so bring a torch! Wifi is available from the
Marree Hotel (for a small fee) and they have an ATM. Friday nights is darts at the hotel and latest release movies are screened in the Marree Cinema each week.
Around the Marree township you can see the original mail truck used by the legendary Tom Kruse in the 1930's and lots of Ghan Railway memorabilia.
