The Rip is
the entrance from Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean to Port Phillip Bay and then to Victoria’s largest Sea Port in
Melbourne. It is an area of very turbulent water not generally suited to small craft but can be navigated by experienced fisherman or Cruising craft between the tides. It is one of only three harbours in the world that require every vessel above a certain tonnage to have a Pilot both ways through
the entrance. The actual deep water channel is only about three hundred metres wide. The Rip is
well worth a visit and viewing from the
Lookout near the
lighthouse at
Point Lonsdale.
