Point Lonsdale is the western headland of The Rip,
the entrance to Poet Phillip Bay, when entering or leaving Bass Strait. It is to the right hand (Starboard) side of a vessel leaving Port Phillip Bay for Bass Straight. A prominent
lighthouse dominates the headland. The town, named for a police officer William Lonsdale, was the birthplace of former Victorian Premier Thomas Hollway.
The area is now closely settled but in early years was associated with escaped convict William Buckley. A
signal station was built there in 1854 and settlement came to the area in the remaining half of the Nineteenth Century.
