Legerwood is a small farming town in the
Ringarooma Valley north east of
Launceston. But it has an additional claim to fame. In 1918, at a ceremony, nine trees were planted to commemorate the nine WWI servicemen who did not return from the war. The trees grew and then aged to the point where early this century they had become a danger. Instead of completely destroying them a chain saw carver was asked to convert the stumps into a lasting memorial to the nine fallen soldiers.
In the vicinity of the trees a limited overnight
parking area for recreational vehicles has been built, complete with
toilets. Basic supplies and
services are available in the town.
