Branxholm is a small town on the Tasman Highway 93 km east of
Launceston. A saw mill operates there and hops are grown as part of its rural economy. It spreads over the floor of the
Ringarooma River valley.
The area was first settled around1870 with the discovery of tin three years later. A shanty town grew up and by1877 the
population was around 300. By 1883 the town had been proclaimed. Tin mining gradually declined to be replaced by timber cutting and in 1970 the first hop fields were planted.
There was a substantial Chinese
population among the miners, commemorated by the Red
Bridge over the river which still carries the highway. There are walking trails which are popular with visitors some of which lead to mining relics.
