Mungerannie Hotel stands on the edge of the Sturt Stony, Tirari, Simpson and Strezlecki deserts, 210km north of
Marree and 320km. south of
Birdsville on the Iconic
Birdsville Track. Nestled alongside the trees and teaming birdlife of the Derwent River - a little piece of Paradise and an ecotourist's delight. This friendly little outback pub offers fuel, tire sales and repairs, accommodation, camping, delicious
home-cooked meals in the dining room and the "best burgers in the Universe!" Relax in the therapeutic warm waters of our Artesian
bush pool next to the wetlands or enjoy a cold beer.
For more than a century the Mungerannie Hotel has stood in some form or another. Originally a store for drovers to gather supplies. Over those years the owner has been the central point for news, goings on, gossip and general chit chat. Today the bar is loaded with interesting paraphernalia, screwed, nailed or hung from every available spot, a delight to review while sipping on a nice cold thirst quencher. The man at the bar, or handling the tyre's is non other than Phil - friendly and full of yarns for all ages and always ready to help those coming through the doors of the last pub in South Australia heading north or is that the first pub when heading out of Queensland.
Just (150 odd metres) behind the pub is a "must see" lagoon, where the bird-life and sunrise / sunsets are just stunning. The Mungeranie wetlands are also an important watering point and refuge area for birds, especially during times of drought and provides a habitat for 110 species of birds. The wetland is
home to several uncommon wading birds, some of which migrate to Australia from northern Asia during the winter months.
Mungeranie is the only fuel and supplies depot on the
Birdsville Track. Consistently reported by travellers to have very friendly owners and clean facilities you'll need to get in early to find a nice spot to
camp.
Services offered include tyre repairs, sales & advice, meals, accommodation (Mungerannie Hotel has 15 rooms arranged as en suites and doubles and singles), & camping.
The pool fed by hot artesian water is a popular spot for tourists to soak after a long dusty drive on the
Birdsville track.
