Hill End is a former gold mining town formed during the 1850's gold rush period. Up to 80,000 people are believed to have lived here during it's peak but by 1945 the
population had dropped to 700. Currently, less than 100 people live in
Hill End however it is a popular place to visit to explore with good camping available nearby.
Many original buildings, churches, police station, houses and stores still exist. The only
services left in operation in the village township today are the
Royal Hotel, the
general store, cake store and antique store. Just off the main road is a NPWS run museum plus, another called History
Hill, is located out of town on the
Bathurst Road.
The public
fossicking area is located just past the
cemetery, off the
Mudgee Road.
The
Royal Hotel and the local Bed and Breakfasts offer accommodation, and there is a range of camping options within the town limits.
Two camping grounds - the Village
Camp Ground is within walking distance from the
Hill End Village and offers powered sites so is a convenient location to
camp. Alternatively, the Glendora Camping ground, which is about 2km north of
Hill End, is run by National Parks and doesn't offer powered sites.
