The G. V. Allen Mining Reserve and the Wheal
Augusta Mine Adit, which are part of the considerable complex of
mine workings in these foothills.
These were the first metalliferous
mine workings in Australia. On the hillside above there is the
chimney stack (not visible from here) of the Glen Osmond Smelting Works, constructed in 1849, somewhere near Jikara Drive.
It was connected to the
chimney by an underground stone tunnel. The smelting work ceased after a short time. The stack was later painted white and served as a guide for ships in the Gulf for many years.
