No problems with Arkaroola. Well worth the visit.

Might pay to check with locals at Leigh Creek/Copley - the gravel roads between Copley and Arkaroola have had rain in recent times - Transport SA reports wheel rutting, ponded water, caution at creek crossings etc. - possibly access for the larger van might mean a scrape or two - when graded, the those roads are very good, but some sections are quite stony and passenger tyres could be compromised - light truck class tyres do much better overall.

There are 2 main ways to Arkaroola and it will depend on how quick you want to get there and where you are coming from.

The quickest will be up the black top and head east at Copley. If you stay the night at the caravan park in Copley, it is a good spot to stay and great meals at the local pub.

The other way is all dirt is the back way on the Martins Well Road (accessible from Wilpena or further south at Yunta). Take your time on the dirt roads and you should not have any problems. You must remember that this is all pastoral country and all those back roads take road trains, and mining vehicles.

Go one way and come back the other.


The Flinders is a top spot and do not rush you trip.

One thing I would be concerned with is stone damage to the front of the van and back of the tow vehicle, especially windows.

Seen it to many times with people not using stone guards and deflectors.

Came across a guy in a new Pathfinder and Ultimate camper at William Creek, we stopped and had lunch in the car park opposite the pub for about an hour..... for that hour we watched the guy and his partner in the Pathfinder and new Ulti trying to get stone chips out.

Just be careful on the dips Budge - some are deceptively deeper than others and will rock the rig around unless you slow right down. We went after a few days at Wilpena Pound north then west through Brachina Gorge, and back east through Parachilna Gorge and on to Blinman. From there to Arkaroola for a few days taking drives around the area. Loved it all.
