William Creek is the smallest settlement in South Australia with a permanent
population of just 6 humans and a dog. Located 165kms from the nearest neighbouring town of
Coober Pedy, William Creek sits in the centre of Australia's (and the world's) biggest cattle station, Anna Creek Station (SK Kidman).
It's the halfway point along the ruggedly famous
Oodnadatta Track. William Creek is a great place to stop and explore the surrounding region. William Creek has the only petrol station between
Marree,
Coober Pedy and
Oodnadatta. Most of all, William Creek is
home to the historical William Creek hotel (circa 1935) - the old
railway siding on the original Ghan railway line.
The nearby 4WD Halligan's Bay 4WD track leads out to the edge of Lake Eyre North where you can
camp if you wish although this is a very exposed environment and most people choose to stay back in town where there is a caravan park with facilities out the back of the William Creek Hotel.
Scenic flights over Lake Eyre depart from William Creek and an outdoor museum is located in the centre of town. The museum is steeped in history including stories and relics of the Overland Telegraph, the Ghan Railway line and
Woomera Rocket Range.
