Copley was originally known as
Leigh Creek but in 1891 the town was officially proclaimed and named Copley after William Copley who, at the time, was the South Australian Commissioner of Crown Lands. However, the Railway Station and
Post Office remained known as
Leigh Creek. In 1916 that name was officially abandoned to the annoyance of some locals, and the entire settlement became known as Copley.
Today the Copley Pub is sometimes still referred to as the
Leigh Creek Hotel and is an imposing stone building.
Another attraction in Copley is the famous Bush
Bakery and Quandon Cafe situated at the
Copley Caravan Park. See separate listing.
