Information

MacKenzie Falls is the most iconic and spectacular waterfall in the Grampians. Watch the majestic waterfall from the lookout platform or tackle the steep climb to the base of the falls. Make the most of your day trip in the Grampians National Park with a strenuous walk through the beautiful MacKenzie River Gorge to Zumsteins Historic Area. Mackenzie Falls is the only waterfall in the Grampians that flows all year round. You can see the beauty and power of MacKenzie Falls from a variety of lookouts and walks, which start at the carpark and cater to a range of abilities. To walk to the base of the falls is highly recommended for the fit. Despite the distance being only 2km return you'll need to trek down 260 narrow steps to reach the base of the falls, so be prepared for a difficult climb back to the top.The following information is posted on a sign at the start of the hike to the falls describing the naming of the falls:"The New South Wales Surveyor-General, Major Mitchell, on his journey through the Grampians in 1836 tried is record the natal features he encountered using the names of the jardiwadjali, the local Aboriginal people.Unable to establish the local name for the falls, he called it MacKenzie Falls, after his friend Captain MacKenzie, We now know that the Jardwadiali call it Migunang wirab, black fish floating on top of water. There are jardwadiali names for most of the natural features in the Grampians, including the mountain range itself - Gariwerd."
