Despite the distance being only 2km return you'll need to trek down 260 narrow steps to reach the base of the falls, so be prepared for a difficult climb back to the top.The following information is posted on a sign at the start of the hike to the falls describing the naming of the falls:"The New South Wales Surveyor-General, Major Mitchell, on his journey through the Grampians in 1836 tried is record the natal features he encountered using the names of the jardiwadjali, the local Aboriginal people.Unable to establish the local name for the falls, he called it MacKenzie Falls, after his friend Captain MacKenzie, We now know that the Jardwadiali call it Migunang wirab, black fish floating on top of water.There are jardwadiali names for most of the natural features in the Grampians, including the mountain range itself - Gariwerd."
