Solomon Wiseman was a man who served with the British intelligence
services against Napoleon’s forces during the very early years of the 1800s. After an episode of misconduct, he was transported as a convict to Australia where he eventually received a full pardon in 1812. He worked hard and was granted 200 acres on the Hawkesbury which later was increased to 1100 acres by 1828. He established his residence which is now the Wisemans Hotel and his ferry around that time and died a very successful man on 29th October 1838.
Wisemans hotel which includes Solomon Wiseman’s original grand
home was built in 1826. The building shows typical 19th century style architecture with five opening on each story, shaped lintels over the windows and a stone arch and fanlight above the main door. Some of the original Cedar doors and door frames remain even to this day. Wiseman was granted a liquor license in 1821 and maintained it for most years until his death. Today the hotel provides the traditional ‘old world’ feel and offers full bar facilities, accommodation, a renowned bistro, live entertainment with Sunday lunch, wood fires, TAB and EFTPOS facilities and children are also welcome.
