The earthfill
dam is both the longest and lowest in the Snowy Scheme, with a crest length of 1067 m but an
embankment height of just 18.7m. Completed in 1966 it has been operating successfully for
well over 50 years.
The pondage acts as a regulating storage holding 20.5 GL. It receives variable inflows of up to 250 cumecs from
Murray 2 Power Station and natural inflow from the Swampy Plain river. Outflow is controlled by a regulating
gate releasing a more uniform flow averaging 30 cumecs over a year, a value which in practice rarely occurs. The annual release is legislated at about 1000 GL which flows into the Hume Reservoir and generates power one last time.
Instantaneous releases are held below 113 cumecs or 9760 ML/day if possible, as this is the channel capacity of the river and avoids flooding. During the spring snow thaw heavy rain may add to the runoff and up to 500 cumecs has been released, with one of the main spillway gates needing to be opened. Releases as low as 5 cumecs are made to satisfy riparian rights for river users.
