Three Mile Dam is a scenic camping location off the Link Rd about 4 km west of the Snowy Mtns Hwy at
Kiandra. It is located in Kosciusko National Park between
Kiandra and
Cabramurra - the highest town in Australia at 1488 metres. To the south is the Mt Selwyn Alpine Ski Resort, which is the northern border of a wilderness area. Beyond the Ski Resort, the gravel Kings Cross Road is closed in winter.
Three Mile Dam offers various shady, reasonably level, communal and isolated sites. Note that
Dam is in valley where cool air settles in afternoon and evening. Be prepared for unpredictable, cooler "alpine" weather. Main site has single, clean drop
toilets. Entrance to
campground has billboard detailing some history and features of the area. There are some unsheltered picnic tables in the central site, but one needs to quick as all tables were in use (mid-Feb 2015) by some longer-term users who parked RVs next to tables and stored their own gear on tables and seats. A bit rude, but to be expected!
Cooma Information Centre staff very helpful, and advised that on a latitudinal line from
Cooma to
Khancoban in the National Park, entry and camping north of this line is free in the off-season - the Oct to June long w/ends.
The snow season is June-October, when you will pay $29 to enter NP. This site is closed by a
locked gate in these months. The east side remains open but has no facilities.
Check with
Information Centre if planning a trip in the snow season. And, bring your snow chains - they are compulsory for 2WD.
While there, pop into
Adaminaby for a visit to the
Snowy Scheme Museum for an enlightening history of the Hydro-electric Scheme. (10 am to 2 pm Weekends or by appointment). While there, also take a short trip to Lake Eucumbene and tour of
Old Adaminaby, now mainly submerged, and
Anglers Reach - retirement
heaven for some! They tell me this is also trout-fishing
heaven, and the presence of a Fisheries Patrol trailer on a ramp suggests the boys/girls are busy.
The area has reasonably good mobile phone coverage.
I'll be back.
