With an altitude of 1488m, Cabramurra is the highest town in Australia. The town is located within the boundaries of
Kosciuszko National Park, on the road between
Kiandra on the
Snowy Mountains Highway to the north and
Khancoban. The road is kept open to
Kiandra by snow plough during winter, also serving the Selwyn snowfields resort.
The town serves as the service centre and accomodation for Snowy Hydro workers. The Bistro 1488 is open to the public as is a small
shop with details of the Snowy Scheme. A
lookout with
picnic shelter provides extensive
views along the Tumut River valley.
