Baffle Creek Fish Habitat was declared on 20 September 2001 and includes 2,320 ha of Baffle Creek and tributaries, 58 km NW of
Bundaberg, in the Burnett /
Miriam Vale Shire Councils.
The Habitat was declared for the protection of highly connected near pristine estuarine and riverine fisheries habitats that support recreational and commercial fisheries, as the region was experiencing increasing urbanisation. Baffle Creek is one of the few river systems in the region unimpeded by weirs or dams, providing uninterrupted connectivity between estuarine and freshwater habitats.
The Habitat consists of Mangrove forests; small patches of Halophila seagrass; intertidal sand, gravel and mud banks;
rock bars.
Recreational and commercial fisheries look for
barramundi; king salmon flathead; bream;
mangrove jack; whiting;
mullet; estuary cod; mud crabs and various prawn species
