Irwin Inlet is a freshwater inlet, which fills from the Bow River and the Kent River and empties into
Peaceful Bay and the Great Southern Ocean.
Canoeists/kayakers can put in here (very shallow at this spot) or back at Bow River (turn left onto dirt track a short distance from highway, then turn left again - deep water). The inlet is affected by winds but sheltered paddling is available in lee of southern shore.
You can paddle south to the inlet mouth along a narrow channel enclosed by sand dunes and/or up Kent River and/or Bow River (the distance you can go upstream depends on recent rainfall). At the head of the narrow channel to the inlet mouth canoes are kept in boatsheds to enable Bibblumum Track walkers to cross.
The sandbar at the inlet opening to
Peaceful Bay is usually closed during summer but in winter the inlet is often open to the sea.
