2nd Lieutenant Hicks was the first crewman on HM Bark Endeavour to sight Australia near this location on April 20th 1770. 1st Lt James
Cook named this point in Hick's honour. A
well weathered now deep green brass
plaque unveiled by Sir Henry Bolte has stood the
test of time since 1970 as has a
plaque with names of the 99 crew and civilians on board. With the 250th anniversary in 2020 a bit of spit and polish may be in order. Or let 50 years of salt and spray give a better sense of time and history.
The point is just a short 2km walk or cycle from the
gate at the end of the Thurra
campground road. Wonderfully weathered
granite tors at the headland and nearby beaches complement the area.
