At the meeting of the Herne and Wombat Spur Tracks, there is a noticeable transition in conditions and name to the Cynthia Range Track with the conditions flattening and the road widening. Following the Wombat Spur for a further 12 kilometres we reached
the summit of Mt Cynthia and for us, a turn to the south as we descended down the Eaglevale Track to the Wonnangatta once again. Eaglevale is another broad
grassy valley where Harry Smith (Son of Oliver and Ellen) established himself after leaving Wonnangatta. Fed by countless tributaries over the proceeding kilometres, the river is now much wider and a rocky ford of 70 metres is required to cross the river. In times of heavy rain, the river was impassable for horses and vehicles so a
suspension foot
bridge was built to provide access to the Eaglevale
Homestead on the northern side of the river. Wide green flats provide excellent
campsite s at Eaglevale and can easily accommodate the largest groups. There is a drop dunny at the eastern end of the
camping area.
