After two very wet La Nina years in 1974/5 Lake Eucumbene rose to over 98% full, or only 65 cm below the bottom of a saddle in the hills NE of the actual
dam. When completed in 1958
Eucumbene Dam never had a spillway, not the usual way dams are designed. Now it needed one as the water was only 100m away from flowing through the saddle, scouring out Locker Ck and potentially flooding the new town of
Adaminaby.
An earthen
embankment was built across the saddle and by 1978 a new spillway too, downstream of the
dam wall.
In the half century since the waters rose to 92% in 1992 and 96. Yens Bay Rd was covered but the curved saddle
dam was still 200m from the waters edge. It has remained high and dry to this day.
