Stand with one foot in Queensland and one foot in New South Wales when you stand on that station platform at the historic
Wallangarra Railway Station.
Wallangarra (Qld) and
Jennings (NSW) share the same historical railway station.
The railway station at
Wallangarra was built in 1888 to service travellers who had to change trains from the standard gauge of New South Wales to Queensland’s narrow gauge. The two trains met here. Note the differing architecture of the platform façades too.
One side of the platform reflects the New South Wales standard design for railways of that era, with a skillion roof, while the other is Queensland’s design with its bullnose verandah roof.
The charming museum is located in the original station’s master office. The museum includes a collection of state railway memorabilia, press clippings and even a train simulator booth where you can conduct your own train. The authentic restoration and tasteful decor make you feel as you are standing in a bygone era, and remind you of the importance of rail in this early history of Australia.
