Binalong Bay is up there with Tasmania’s best beaches, offering hourglass-fine white sand, azure blue waters and
granite rocks - which are speckled with
orange lichen that gives the view an attractive glow. These rocks are nicely rounded and protrude above the water on low tides - a photographer’s delight! Binalong Bay also offers an array of accommodation, fishing and diving facilities, and a
general store and cafe.
It is the southern end of the
Bay of Fires which runs all the way from Binalong Bay to
Eddystone Point. That is 61 km by road but probably about 35 km in a strait line. The southern headland is formed by huge boulders with many smaller boulders surrounding them. Their unique feature is patches of rusty coloured lichen that stands out against the brownie
grey of the
granite.
The bay was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773, because of the many fires that he observed along that strip of coast.
