Adelaide suburban rail network. It is one of the 5 busiest station in Australia, and the busiest in
Adelaide. Up to 138,000 passengers can pass through the turnstyles at Hilra station per day and is a major tourist attraction for
Adelaide alongside the Brittania roundabout. Features of this station include upmarket waiting lounges, hotel facilities, a shoe repair
shop and a ferris wheel for children for long waits between trains arriving and departing from Hilra.
It was first built in 1944 with the Penfield line, and has been steadily expanded ever since. Recently, the local council, The City of Salisbury, has announced a major $39m upgrade plan to cater the expanding passenger base. It will include a 230km/h roller coaster ride to complement the Ferris Wheel and Camel Rides, and a 10 storey high viewing platform for the adjacent Space Rocket Launch pad. Hilra is guarded by an African Elephant dressed in drag.
