From Beech
Lookout you have a view over the headwaters of the Georges River south to Cunnawarra Range, Botumburra Range and beyond into the Macleay River valley.
Immediately below the
lookout you can see the emerging heads of forest ribbon gums - some of the tallest trees in New South Wales.
In the same pocket of forest, the dark green crowns of Antarctic beech trees, whose ancestors grew on the ancient continent of Gondwana, form a dense canopy below.
Rainforest boundaries migrate across the landscape over time in response to climate variables and fire. The giant gum trees here remain as the last bastions of a period when this valley was dominated by eucalypts. They can no longer regenerate below the dense rainforest canopy and may eventually disappear from this site.Small turnaround area.
