North Lakes is the premier commercial location in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. Located34 kilometres or 50 minutes drive north of
Brisbane City it is one of a number of regional commercial centres that comprise the Greater
Brisbane area. Originally part of the now adjoining Mango
Hill it was gazetted 2006 as a suburb and named for the housing development that has lead to the construction of thousands of houses, flats and
home units.
The
population at the 2016 census was 21,671 but is now substantially greater. At about that time the North Lakes area was named as Queensland's most rapidly growing areas.
North Lakes was selected by the then Pine Rivers Council as the site for the development of a regional centre and is now almost fully developed commercially. Westfield developed a shopping mall at
the junction of the Bruce Highway and Anzac Avenue which has been expanded twice to accommodate growth in demand for retail and light commercial
services. The most recent expansion of Westfield North Lakes was the inclusion of
Brisbane's second Ikea homewares store which is part of the retail complex.
The council has a secondary administrative centre there with library and meeting rooms Schools and colleges are part of the
services available. Most suppliers to the general public have a regional centre in the area surrounding the mall. There are a number of retirement villages and an extensive medical precinct. The Westfield development includes a cinema.
