Belconnen is the second town centre of
Canberra ACT. Although the district name of Belconnen was was not gazetted until March 1966 the name had been associated with the locality since the days of the early settlers. Europeans farmers were in the area from the mid 1800s and some traces of agricultural activity remain. Before then it had been the
home of the Ngunnawal people. Urban development commenced in 1967 and by 2011 the Belconnen
population had reached 92,444.
Today, Belconnen has a university, the University of
Canberra, a campus of the
Canberra Institute of Technology, the Australian Institute of Sport,
Canberra Stadium (
home of the
Canberra Raiders-RL, ARL premiers 1989, 1990 and 1994 and ACT
Brumbies-RU, premiers Super 12 in 2001 and 2004!!!). Bruce Indoor Stadium and a major public hospital (Calvary). Government offices headquartered in Belconnen include the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), ComSuper and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The centre of Belconnen is Lake Ginninderra, which has on its southern shore the Belconnen mall and a number of other retail premises. Belconnen Fresh Food Markets is
home to the Giant Mushroom playground, featuring a six metre high pink, yellow and blue mushroom.
